A Churchill man spent more than a day walking back to town after being shot while out trapping, RCMP say.

RCMP and emergency medical services responded to a report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound and exposure around 3 p.m. Feb. 7. The 29-year-old man was taken to hospital and told police that he was shot by a person on a snowmobile while he was out trapping about eight kilometres west of Churchill by Button Bay. The victim said he believed the person may have mistaken him for an animal.

The suspect in the shooting was wearing a black and blue snowsuit, a neck warmer and a black tuque. The shooter was travelling on a black and blue snowmobile pulling a sled that was last seen heading north from Button Bay.

The incident is believed to have occurred during daylight hours Feb. 5 or Feb. 6.

The victim remains in hospital and Churchill RCMP ask anyone with information about the incident to call the detachment at 204-677-2551.
