Trapper Obituary: Albert "AL" J. Dietz Jr.

Albert “Al” Dietz Jr., 75, a US Army Veteran passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the Boundary Waters Care Center. He was a devout Catholic and his faith sustained him as he lived courageously and hopefully with lymphoma.
Al was born in Sleepy Eye, MN April 7, 1943. He is preceded in death by his parents Mary (Sorensen) and Albert J. Dietz Sr. Al is survived by his sister Caroline Dietz-Carlson and Johan Carlson, and his brother Michael Dietz and special friend Tammy Sellner as well as many friends.
Albert served in the US Army, Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Fort Bliss, Texas, and South Korea from 1965 to 1967. He was proud of his service and enjoyed sharing that experience with others.
Al went to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sleepy Eye, MN. He attended Vermilion Community college from 1972-1973 and earned an associate degree in Natural Resources technology. Al loved the outdoors and in 1973 went to work for the US Forest Service, Isabella, MN. and transferred to Ely, MN, US Forest Service in 1979. He lived and worked in Ely the rest of his life and became part of a group of the most amazing friends who supported him throughout his life.
Al was always busy doing something ~ he got his professional pilots license in 1977 and enjoyed that hobby, as well as hunting, fishing, trapping, spending time at his hunting shack and, he loved going to garage sales. He was an expert trapper and skeet shooter. Al also especially enjoyed working at the Knights of Columbus Lenten fish fries and having daily coffee at the Front Porch with his friends.
Al was a member of the Minnesota Trappers Association, the Knights of Columbus, and the Vermilion Range Trap Club.
He worked on several volunteer projects including serving as an advanced hunter education instructor for the Minnesota DNR, working at Minnesota Deer Hunters Association banquets, and Minnesota Trappers Association conventions.
A special thank you to the physicians and staff at Essentia Health - Ely Clinic, Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital, Essentia Health Cancer Center, Duluth, Essentia Health - Virginia Clinic Infusion Therapy, Essentia Health East Range Hospice and the staff at Boundary Waters Care Center.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
