HERMANSVILLE — Members of U.P. Trappers (District 3) will host the 15th Annual Young Trappers Workshop Saturday at the Community Center in Hermansville from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST.
Each young trapper 11 years old and under will receive a free weasel trapping startup kit (trap, lure, stretcher, box, etc.). For 12 years old and up, raccoon lure and a brand new raccoon trap will be given out. All youngsters will receive a guaranteed door prize. There will be free literature and fur identification game at the front desk. The concession stand will be open and proceeds from it go to North Central Area Schools Scholarship Fund. There will be raffles for many interesting prizes.
Many veteran trappers will be on hand, along with the presenters, all willing to share their proven methods, answer questions and interact with the youngsters (or oldsters) in attendance. Clint Seawright (Skunk Creek Trapping Supply) will be giving a demo on muskrat, mink and raccoon. Jim Fornetti will be doing a demo on weasel harvest and Nathan Belanger will show how to put up muskrat, mink and raccoon pelts. All presenters will not only show trapping methods, but will stress the importance of safe, legal, humane, and ethical means of capture; and the importance of making good use of all parts of the resource and the importance of sportsmanship in the field.
Sign-up sheets for the next Trapper Education program will be available. Tickets may still be available for the 1st Annual District 3 Trappers Banquet in Norway on March 7. The banquet will feature a buffet dinner, raffles and lots of prizes. Tickets are limited to 200 attendees.
“There are trapper workshops going on throughout the country, and most of them charge a significant fee for participants. Our workshop is free and all participants not only gain knowledge for starting out in the sport but win prizes and receive some great startup gear as well,” said Randy Johnsen, a long-time member of District 3. “We thank the volunteers, donors and of course the kids, moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas who attend for making this event such a great learning experience for all involved.”
