Surge in Raccoon pop. prompted call for open hunting season

One night a couple years ago, Carol Tripp and her husband returned to their central Iowa farm to find about 65 raccoons lined up at their cattle feeder, eating corn.
Inside the nearby cattle shed, dozens more filled the rafters, likely drawn to the farm as they searched for water during the hot, dry summer, said Tripp. "It was crazy," she said. "Crazy."
Her husband, David, killed as many raccoons as he could in the cattle shed, and the couple contacted the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, letting officials know they had shot the animals outside the hunting season. State officials agreed the animals were a nuisance and could be killed, she said.
