Following pressure by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, NH Citizens Against Recreational Trapping, and other orgs, the Miss New Hampshire Scholarship Program will no longer award winners with fur coats.

The organizations had been working for a number of years to try and stop the practice.

"No kind pageant winner wants to celebrate her new title by having dead animals draped around her shoulders," PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said. "PETA is celebrating Miss New Hampshire Scholarship Program's humane makeover, which empowers women to listen to their conscience and reject cruelty."
