SPALDING — Longtime trapper John “Gunner” Gunville will give an educational presentation at the U.P. Trappers Association District 3 monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Normenco Sportsmen’s Club, just east of Powers/Spalding.

The main theme of Gunville’s presentation will be trapping equipment modifications and inventions. Making traps more effective, humane and easier to use will help all trappers have an enjoyable and successful experience during the trapping seasons.

“While most traps and other outdoor equipment can be used right out of the box, there are a lot of modifications that the trapper can do to improve equipment,” Gunville said.

Gunville began trapping at age 11 and has continued for more than 50 years.

“Don’t think I didn’t make mistakes, but I believe experience is the best teacher,” he said. “Little by little, I learned what worked and what didn’t and eventually was experiencing success.”

Gunville handles all of his own fur and has put up thousands of pelts. He serves as regional president of the U.P. Trappers Association and as vice president of District 3.

“This will be a great meeting for not only veteran members of the club, but newcomers and anyone interested in becoming a trapper, especially youngsters,” said Bob Whitens, a longtime member of U.P. Trappers.
