Bygones: 40 years ago, 20,000 trappers were expected to come to Duluth

Three people were killed when Duluth & Iron Range passenger train No. 3 crashed into an automobile at 45th Avenue East in Duluth. W.S. Kempton, 51, his son, John Kempton, 17, and Edgar Gyllenborg, 14, died in the crash.

The death toll in a flash fire that leveled the 73-year-old Northwood Inn in Crookston rose to seven, including Alfred F. Dowl, 43, of Duluth, and Paul Gregory, 73, formerly of Duluth.

Duluth will host the 1985 National Trappers Association Convention, expected to draw about 20,000 people, making it the largest event scheduled in the city's history. Many attendees are expected to stay in a tent city along the bayfront, renting space from the Burlington Northern Railroad.
